The northern state, called North Island, is composed of 24, mostly forested, provinces. New Zealand also owns Samoa, an island chain composed of two provinces, both of which are plains, located northeast of Fiji. The country itself is composed of 40 provinces organized into two moderately-sized island states connected by a single strait. New Zealand is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of Australia and south of France's New Caledonia and the United Kingdom's Fiji islands.
